Your CO2 Emissions

Most people have no idea how much CO2 their lifestyle produces in a year. Transylvania Green will tell you how many trees an average person needs to plant to offset their carbon footprint. Not only will this be cheaper than in other areas of the world, it is significantly less carbon positive than the same process elsewhere. The reason for this is that planting the trees in Europe - where the pollution is - is much better than in South America or Asia.

The Carpathian Mountains and the area they enclose ( Transylvania) are often referred to as " the green heart of Europe". Recently, the international organisation Greenpeace has described Romania's mountains and hills as the " last virgin forests of Europe".

In fact, it is not just the forests themselves, but the unique mosaic of diverse woodland, pastures and meadows that makes Transylvania one of the few net C sinks of the EU. Forests regulate the climate and ensure a relatively constant amount of precipitation, while grasslands absorb CO2 from the atmosphere and lock it in the soil.

This unique part of Europe provides benefits to the whole continent. As Tibi Hartel, the Transylvanian biologist has said : "The species rich meadows, pastures and forests of Transylvania have the potential to assimilate a huge amount of CO2 emitted into the atmosphere largely by the developed West. The assimilated CO2 is used in the food webs of these semi natural and natural ecosystems. Thus, protecting these landscapes may significantly help in our "fight" against global warming besides many other potential services for our welfare."

Unfortunately, local landowners and inhabitants are not rewarded for continuing to manage their land and resources in a conservational manner. Transylvania Green will address this problem by making payments to locals to maintain the ecosystem.
